Bmw Vs Tesla

By Cianán Clancy

Back in September I had an opportunity to have a look at a pre production of BMW 5 series codenamed G30.

In several ways the BMW has improved the core 5 series product, better visuals, better dynamics, better engines and a vastly improved interior with a TFT cockpit. The 5 series also takes the 7 series remote key fob allowing remote parking and summons capability. This vehicle is expected to take the flight in an increasingly digital battleground. The version of Connected Drive while improved left me feeling a little disappointed. BMW’s current Connected Drive has made great strives it’s still not near the capability of Tesla Autopilot. While BMW Connected Drive radar cruise control is good for low speed traffic particular in the East Link Tollbridge here in Dublin it is nowehere near TESLA Autopilots capability. I also miss the simple things from the Tesla such as the ability to leave the key in my pocket and walk up to the door and the car not only unlocking but also the door physically opening allowing me to slide in without even touching the exterior of the car.

BMW Connected App is also still very basic. It has been updated in the last 4 weeks but weirdly as a completely new app and not as an update to the old version. The new version loses Google Maps, which is a deal breaker for me so I will be staying with Google Maps.

A big deal was made of Remote 3D or the ability to remotely see around your car. However for me this feature is very limited.
