Amazon is on the hunt for a second HQ. Why isn’t Dublin on the list?

By Cianán Clancy

Amazon is on the hunt for a city to house their second headquarters with several US and Canadian cities lining up to participate in what one city mayor has called, “The Olympics of Bidding”. With over $5 billion promised in investment for the construction of the new facilities, the overall impact would far exceed this figure .

Although Bezos said in his statement . that he was looking in to sites in North America, IDA Ireland should be fighting hard to get Dublin in that mix. Amazon already has its European HQ in Dublin, which has already developed nearly €2 Billion in data center infrastructure to support the companies that it already hosts and Amazon is already a big part of that . Additionally Amazon has developed an impressive following in Europe and particularly in the UK, where their sales last year topped over €7 Billion . Positioning themselves in Dublin would put Amazon’s HQ2 right at the center of one of its largest markets outside the US.

Dublin has attracts skilled workers from around the world . With Google, Twitter, and Facebook already located in the area, it has grown to have among the highest densities of skilled workers in the entire Euro area. Having much of the infrastructure to operate a business of this scale already in place, Amazon’s transition to this location would be seamless.

Dublin has become the center of corporate activity in Europe and American companies have taken note. Home to European headquarters of American tech giants such as eBay, Yahoo! and many others, Dublin would be the ideal candidate for Amazon’s proposed HQ2.
